In November 2017, the Executive Governor of Kaduna State, His Excellency Mallam Nasir El-Rufai inaugurated members of the Kaduna State Peace Commission (KAPECOM) and tasked them with the responsibility of ensuring the implementation of the law establishing it.
The objective of the Commission is to ensure the “monitoring, mitigation and prevention of conflicts with the view to promoting peaceful and harmonious co-existence in the State”.
Within the first year of its existence, the Commission embarked on a multi-stakeholder consultation process that led to the development of its strategic plan- ‘Pathway to Sustainable Peace in Kaduna State’.
The aim was to foster inclusiveness and participation through sustained engagement and consultation of all stakeholders in Kaduna. All groups including women and youth were purposively consulted to ensure their specific concerns and issues were accommodated in the plan.
The five-year (2019-2023), multi-disciplinary Peace Strategy seeks to tackle the main drivers of violent conflicts in the state, with an overarching goal of ensuring that a proactive and effective conflict prevention, mitigation and resolution mechanism is in place in Kaduna State.
